Nathan S. Merrill, JD, LL.M.

Introduction

As Special Counsel to Handler Law, Mr. Merrill works closely with the firm’s partners and clients on sophisticated tax, estate planning and business matters. In this role, he collaborates seamlessly with Handler Law to deliver integrated legal strategies for affluent families, entrepreneurs and family offices.

Mr. Merrill advises affluent families and individuals, successful entrepreneurs and businesses in relation to their personal, family and business legal needs. Mr. Merrill focuses on advanced tax strategies which incorporate all aspects of corporate, estate and tax planning in a strategic and integrated protocol. His practice involves handling a wide range of challenges, including essential start-up questions such as choice of business entity, initial formation and capitalization issues, the growth process, financing, general business counsel, shareholder disputes, executive compensation and business transactions such as asset and stock acquisitions and divestitures and mergers.

Mr. Merrill earned a master of laws in taxation degree (LL.M.) from the University of Denver, law degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and bachelors degree from the University of Utah. He endeavors to consistently develop and identify bespoke strategies and to facilitate unique, customized and tax efficient solutions that serve a wide variety of the firm’s clients.

Mr. Merrill advises families and individuals with respect to the preservation of their intended legacy through well conceived and drafted estate plans, including wealth transfer, succession, charitable and insurance planning. He assists with the establishment and ongoing legal support for family offices, which serve multiple generations of family members and help to promote the family’s growth and development through managed deployment of legacy. Mr. Merrill regularly serves as counsel and trusted advisor to entrepreneurs and investors in developing legal and business strategies surrounding growth and exit.
