Associate
Matthew R. Case is an Associate in the Advanced Planning and Family Office Practice Group at Handler Law. Matt is licensed to practice law in Illinois and focuses his practice on taxation, trusts and estates and advanced planning matters. Matt also has experience working at large public accounting firms, where he focused his practice on state and local tax matters, tax compliance and tax advisory services for nonprofit and for-profit organizations.
Taxation. Matt helps clients navigate through various tax needs for businesses and high-net-worth individuals, including tax compliance, business succession and planning strategies. Matt advises clients on the federal and state tax impacts of future and pending purchase and sale transactions. His clients have consisted largely of public charities and grantmaking private foundations in various industries, including sports, entertainment, arts and culture and education. Due to this, he has also accumulated years of experience in advising nonprofit organizations on operations matters, restructuring strategies and in preparing annual Forms 990, 990-PF and 990-T, along with corresponding state charitable and income tax returns.
Trusts & Estates. Matt assists clients from a variety of backgrounds on their core estate planning needs. He prepares simple and complex trusts to maximize tax efficiencies and ensure the needs of his clients, their spouses and their children are met in accordance with their wishes. Matt also assists high-net-worth clients with implementing asset protection and closely-held business and family strategies for general structuring and succession planning purposes.
Advanced Planning. In addition to core estate planning, Matt works with ultra-high-net-worth clients on their advanced planning needs for gifting, asset protection and overall income and estate tax efficiencies. In addition, Matt serves clients through the creation of various entities and trusts for the benefit of future generations through the establishment of family offices.
Matt received his law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law where he served as the Associate Editor of the International Law Journal and the Children’s Legal Rights Journal, and was a member of the Loyola Business Law Clinic. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in History and German, graduating with University Honors.
